AISL Welcomes Memphis Mojo
Chris
Talley, president of Memphis Pro Soccer, newest
member of the American Indoor Soccer League, will
be called the Memphis MOJO and play its home games at the Agricenter
Showplace Arena in Cordova, about 15 miles east of downtown
Memphis. The MOJO will begin play in the 2006-07 AISL season.
"We're
right in the heart of soccer country here in Cordova," said
Talley. "I think [the Showplace Arena] gives us the best of
both worlds, an intimate facility right in the middle of the soccer
community."
The
Showplace Arena has a capacity of 4,500. The Arena is part of a
larger property, called Agricenter, which opened in 1985 and encompasses
three additional properties known for livestock shows, equestrian
events, concerts, motocross and other meetings. It also houses the
world's largest urban farm and research test facility.
About
the MOJO Talley said, "I had been toying around with the name
since I initially approached [AISL commissioner] Paul LaPointe about
bringing a team to Memphis," said Talley. "It's never
been used before, and it sounds like something you could have fun
with." Talley is working with the AISL to design a logo and
mascot for the team, whose color scheme will be black and purple.
